Green H want to hear from potential volunteers with an interest in recycling or ICT.
Green H is particularly looking to hear from those who can design leaflets or posters. Green H are also looking for a designer to make the website look more professional (www.greenh.co.uk). Any other volunteering suggestions are welcome.
Green H is a exciting new organisation starting up in Greater Manchester. In short the group refurbishes old computers using Linux and sales them at a cheap rate. The sold customer is provided support so he or she need not worry about getting a used computer.
Green H hopes to eventually become a workers coop and be to PC World what Unicorn and Eighth Day are to Tesco. It is looking for new volunteers who can help with the project.
Currently the problem of improving computer performance by getting a more powerful computer is analogous to solving traffic congestion by building new roads. Just like the fact that new roads create new traffic, newer better computers attract newer advanced software that pushes relies on the new performance boasts. Old computers can not cope with the new software and thus become redundant.
The problem is exaggerated by common Microsoft Windows operating system (OS) with its one size fits all approach. Older PCs simply can not cope with later versions of this OS even though much of what is included is never used, This is analogous to new fast cars being sold with a compulsory but rarely used heavy trailer.
Linux provides much of the answer. The operating system is lighter and more flexible than Windows. It thus allows older PCs to have a much longer shelf life. Moreover, many Linux computers will run faster that a Windows PC with a greater spec. Finally the Linux software is free to use, making this an attractive financial option.
One of the fears people have of buying second hand is that there will be no support if anything goes wrong. This is the second interesting feature of Green H. Customers will get a support contract to help them set the system up, teach them about unusual software and to help them with any problems that may occur problems. All in all the customer will get a great functioning, ethical product at a much lower price than in PC World.
